Comments from Polonaise spinners

My new Kromski Polonaise wheel came in earlier in the week and knowing myself and knowing that I had a very busy week and wouldn't be able to resist its seductive allure once it was out of the box, I left it crated in my dining room for the entire week... until today. It really wasn't on the schedule until tomorrow, but what with today being a snow day and all....

She is sitting in all her glory next to my favorite chair in my all too tiny living room with half a bobbin of Shetland spun up just to "break her in". I LOVE this wheel! Not only is it beautiful, it spins like a dream. I am in love! I am SOOOOOOOOO pleased.

I know this wheel is new to this country and not many people have had a chance to try it or the castle style Mazurka out, but I highly recommend looking into the Kromskis if you need a new wheel. They are reasonably priced and the workmanship is amazing. My husband, who was actually the one who did most of the assembly, (you know how guys are... he had the pieces out of the box and unwrapped before I even had coffee in my cup this
morning! I'd have had to knock him out to put it together myself, but the instuctions, unlike some other wheels I've had, were so clear that I could have done it easily.) and who is quite a craftsman himself, kept marveling over the well designed construction and the ease with which it went together. Every part actually fit together exactly the way it is supposed to. For as light weight as it is, it is an incredibly stable wheel. It is the first wheel I've bought without knowing a 'lot' about it and I am not one bit disappointed.

Sorry to carry on like this, but I knew you would all understand! Haven't been this enthused about anything since my first granddaughter was born.

I bought [ a non-Kromski wheel] double drive about 6 months ago and I am now spinning very happily with the high speed flyer at its fastest setting. I love it. But..............today I sat down with the 24" Kromski wheel and spun for barely one minute...... Wow!!!!! There is just more power and smoothness there. Compared to the [other wheel], treadling is effortless. You can treadle really, really slowly on the one hand and, on the other, it feels as though it has enough power (the 24" wheel as opposed to the 18", I would imagine, is in large part responsible here) that you could treadle as fast as you can draft for as long as you like and the whole thing would feel like it were just gliding along. I have no sense, however, that the yarn I would spin would be any better than what I am now spinning. What would change would be the ease of spinning and the potential for faster spinning. I do suspect, however, that the ability to treadle really slowly when the need arose would contribute to the quality of my spinning.

By the way, no affiliation with either product.
